What is Functional English

Functional skills have been introduced as a result of employer’s claims that school leavers did not have the ability to apply their English skills in practical situations.  They may have reached the level required in order to achieve a grade A*-C in English but without being able to use it confidently, effectively and independently, it has little benefit to business

Why Study Functional English

Functional English can be studied as a standalone subject but is now integrated into the new GCSE English specification which means that it is an essential skill for all secondary age learners.

How can Functional English Help?

Functional English develops those practical, real life skills required in everyday situations.  Organising and communicating ideas effectively and altering your approach depending on the intended audience are valuable skills, essential in many workplaces.

Whether you are writing a letter of application to accompany your CV or a detailed set of operating instructions, getting the tone, language and vocabulary right makes the difference between effective and ineffective writing
